Parramatta is a city that needs to be left alone and I've heard old ladies on the train say it used to be pretty, I've read that in living memory you could swim in the river without getting sick. Buildings are ripped down every twenty years or so giving the city no time to develop character. It's sad and I think it's damaging to the psyche.
Take pride in this city, it has a soul. Excavations reveal that it was inhabited long before colonisation. The history in the built environment is deep. The people who have come here from one generation to the next only add to the complexity. There is a lesson in respect that can be learnt from a city like this. It's beautiful, multicultural, and older than it would appear.
